This is a very clean and excellent appearing Colt Frontier Six Shooter, with smooth metal and a very desirable patina. It has traces of blue and the patina is a plum mixture. Serial No. 7967X has a Factory Letter noting this Colt Single Action was shipped to Wexell & DeGress in Mexico City, on October 14, 1882. The CFSS appears as the letter describes: 7-1/2 inch barrel, blue finish , 44/40 caliber, and walnut grips. Mechanically: the working action is 100% perfect. All the hammer notches are correct, the cylinder rotates and locks into place ( indexes), and all is tight ! It also releases to fire correctly, No mechanical problems.
One of the most desirable aspects of 44/40 revolvers, as this one is early, it has the Acid Etched barrel panel of Colt Frontier Six Shooter. The one here is visible, but greatly faded, but there ! ALL applied Factory Markings are present: barrel address, frame patents, barrel panel, ALL matching serial numbers ( including cylinder) in correct locations. A very excellent letter, because in the Book, The Texas Gun Trade, by Chris Hirsch it details a fact about Wexell & DeGresss . Yes, the main ship location was Mexico City, but they drop shipped to other satellite locations in Texas. Such as Brownsville, and other Border Towns. The Border Business even then, makes this a very interesting Colt Frontier Six Shooter !
