This is a S&W offering right from the Early Western Frontier. The 44 Rim Fire was the infancy of self contained cartridges. First designed for the Henry Repeating Rifle at the close of the Civil War. Immensely popular, then appearing in the early Cartridge revolvers, like the S&W American in 1872, and later years. Once again we see the wisdom of it, as there was the Henry rifle, followed by the 1866 Winchester Yellow Boy in 44RF. This 2nd Model S&W American fires the 44RF. Serial No. 2567X would have been manufactured in 1873, and most certainly went to the Western Frontier. The 44 Rim Fire stayed Popular along the Southern Border Frontier for a very longtime. This 2nd American was and is quite a ” looker” a Bright Factory Nickel finish, further enhanced by Checkered Ivory grips. The original owner was proud of his revolver. Now in 2026, there is about 75% + original factory nickel plate finish. There is also some gray speckling on the barrel & Cylinder where the nickel has flaked off, and a light gray patina is present. IMPORTANT: all parts are the factory original, . clean screw slots, and the Star Ejector system works 100% correctly. Rising to eject spent cartridges when opened, then snapping back into the cylinder as it should. I re-iterate all parts are factory originally down to the smallest parts! Mechanically the American is 100% CORRECT. Opening function, and the Cocking Indexing, cylinder rotation, locking tight, releasing to fire, simply put NO ! mechanical problems. It is further enhanced with in my Opinion Factory placed Checkered Ivory Grips !! at worst the selling dealer in 1873, they are all original to this revolver. The American revolver had a very LOW number of 44 rim fire chamberings, they concentrated on the new caliber of 44 American. If you are seeking a REAL !!! Western Frontier of the Wild West Period, this is it, it was out there when Colt was still on the drawing table. It is about time this Model get it’s just deserts. You know eye witnesses said it was a Engraved 2nd Model American in that that Wyatt Earp had at the OK Corral shoot out! Texas Jack Omohundro, carried and used an American, plus Cole Younger at Northfield, Belle Starr, and Dallas Stoudenmire so on and so forth. If you are a Wester Frontier Collector, they belong in the Collection. This 44 Rim Fire simply has ” The Look” and caliber of the Old Frontier, when self continued cartridges began appearing, along with Carbines and Rifles.
